Backend architecture of a social network with more than 500,000 users

aka-aki is Europe’s most important location-based social network, which had over 300.000 users at the begining of the project and grew up to 500.000 (by March 2010).

They have plans to expand to United States, France, England, Spain, Italy and Japan.

The backend system supports a web fronted as well as iPhone, Android, Blackberry and J2ME clients through a lightweight Web Service interface. This backend, which is basen in Java, needed a redesing and reimplementation to support the growing volume of users expected.

Agilogy was responsible to define the new artechture of it and work with a mixed team Agilogy (Barcelona) – aka-aki (Berlin) with collaborations of teams in London, Frankfurt and Warsaw.
